I discovered a new passion in Acyrlic Painting during the 2020 Lockdown. This majestic deer, also titled as “Kralj Šume” (croatian for: King of the Forest), was one of my bigger acrylic projects. Since I primarily create a lot of smaller practice paintings on paper, ever so often I want to see how useful the practice actually was and challenge myself to create something I haven’t done yet. This deer was one of those challenges – which for the record – I enjoyed every second of it!
Before I started painting this traditionally I sat down for a few hours thinking about what I want to do and how I want to do it. Once I had the idea I made a quick digital concept artwork so I don’t waste any time traditionally. All questions were answered digitally so painting later went super smooth!
Concept:
The concept was photo-bashed and then painted on top to adjust for lighting. Some elements like the god rays or fawn in the back were painted fully. Everything else consists of diferent pictures and overpaint.
Blockout:
After the concept I would do a pencil sketch of the scene and block in some rough colors. This is the most difficult step for me because it takes a long time befor ethe image starts to look like something. I usually have little hope at this stage altough I am confident I can always find a solution to make it look good – as my acyrilic sketches have taught me.
Underpainting:
This is what I would call an underpainting in my case. Some Artist would now start painting in Oils, others would maybe even have more details in this stage. But for me this is where I go back in and refine every layer, every piece and add all the details the artwork needs.
